Where Do You Source Your Water?

If you are one of the millions of Americans who are now working from home, and you had a “water cooler” at the office, you might be missing that cold, purified drink. Your home’s water may come from a variety of sources – and it is vital you know the source and what it could contain to get the best tasting and safest water from your tap. An odd or foul color, taste, or smell, or signs of fixture staining can point to common water quality problems.

Urban Water Systems

All community water systems in the United States must follow specific standards in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). That’s hugely important! But, it does not necessarily mean the water from your tap tastes good or that all impurities have been eliminated. It still could contain impurities, minerals, and possible other contaminants not regulated.

Many homes have water that smells somewhat like a swimming pool from chlorine, which is commonly used as a disinfectant at the treatment facility to your home. After traveling long distances from the facility to your home, the sterilizing chemical is no longer necessary in your water …and you and your family certainly don’t have to drink it!

Not all contaminants are considered a health risk, but other things like lead from old infrastructure may be harmful if consumed at high levels. Lead is typically without taste or smell, but high amounts can give water a “metallic” taste.

By law, homes with municipal water supply are required to be notified when contaminants that could cause illness are found. Cities also test and compile a complete report each year, called the “Consumer Confidence Report.” This report contains information on any contaminants found in the tests, potential health effects, and share where the water is sourced from. You can request a copy from your local water utility organization. Simply give them a call or visit their website.

Well Water

Homeowners who get their water from wells are individually responsible for testing and confirming that their drinking water is safe, because this is not regulated by an outside source. We recommend testing for the most common contaminants every year. Water that fills your well is constantly changing based on the environment around it.

Even if you don’t taste any odd flavor of the water, over the years it can change slowly and you may not notice it. Recording your annual water quality to your home is helpful to monitor the current conditions and helps troubleshoot any potential problems in the future.

Check with your county health department to see if they will assist you test for nitrates or bacteria. If that is not an option, our team at Futuramic’s Clean Water Center you can help get it tested. Many laboratories provide a sample container with instructions for testing to ensure the water you collect to sample is not contaminated during the process of collection. Sterile containers MUST be used when testing for bacteria, and various test procedures call for the water running a few minutes before filling the container.
