UV Purification – How Does it Work?

The Process

There are four main elements in a UV water treatment system. An ultraviolet lamp, which is wrapped in a quartz sleeve, a stainless steel chamber, and a system controller.

While the science behind the system is complex, the idea and process is really very simple. Water runs through a steel chamber and is exposed to UV light. This light deactivates bacteria and pathogens in your water, leaving it cleaner and safer.

We have been able to identify the specific dose of UV light that is capable of disrupting the DNA of bacteria and viruses. Damaged DNA prevents both function and reproduction of the offending microorganism, rendering it completely harmless and incapable of breeding or causing infection.

Different pathogens require unique doses and intensities to be successfully deactivated. Even the flow of your water alters the way the light needs to be administered. Most UV filters have many methods and systems in place to ensure that the proper dosing takes place for maximum safe purification.

Why UV?

 

There are benefits to any water purification system you choose, and UV treatments come with plenty.

One advantage of UV purification is the absence of any chemical solvent or disinfectant. This reduces the environmental impact, as well as any negative health effects. The water is changed on a physical level. The One-Two Punch

The only way we could improve on our UV purification system was to team it up with a water softener. Minerals and solid elements, as well as cloudiness naturally found in your water will all absorb and diffuse the UV light. This reduces the efficacy of UV light as a purification element.

Some UV purification systems are equipped with a carbon filter, which safely removes most sediment and improves the flavor and clarity of your water, but does not remove the minerals or microorganisms still thriving in your supply. A water softener is the safest way to improve the hardness of your water.
